Systematic review of vaccine efficacy against Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni in North American cattle

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) continues to greatly affect beef, dairy, and veal production systems. Vaccination against the bacteria involved is common, yet questions remain regarding efficacy. The purpose of this review was evaluate evidence for effects vaccinating United States or Canadian calves Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Histophilus somni on BRD-related morbidity, mortality, postmortem lung lesions. Comprehensive searches were performed MEDLINE, EMBASE, CAB Abstracts via OVID. Practitioner references relevant systematic reviews searched by hand. Major commercial vaccine producers queried additional product information. Peer-reviewed, published after 1979, full text available in English, US/Canada, control group included, sufficient randomization/blinding, correct statistical methods essential criteria inclusion review. Five studies met criteria. Of them, 1 investigated a H. M. haemolytica feeder calves, studied vaccination evaluated different commercially experimental young Holstein multiple vaccines P. multocida combinations thereof nursing beef calves. There are too few repeated comparable populations support further analysis BRD bacterial efficacy North American cattle.
